The organization

Projeto Saúde e Alegria is a non-profit organization based in Santarém in the Amazonas region. The team of Projeto Saúde e Alegria concentrates on promoting topics such as health, education, culture and climate protection. It is their vision to improve political processes, living conditions and civilian rights in an overall context of developing integrated and sustainable communities. Including members from all levels of society in decision-making processes is an integral part of the team’s efforts.

The impact of climate change in the Amazon

The organization reaches nearly 30,000 people who are scattered among remote villages and streams in the Amazon. In the region, people have little choice but to sustain their livelihoods through a range of activities including hunting, fishing, timber production and cultivation. Mass deforestation severely threatens self-sufficiency which causes the destruction of people’s subsistence: the forest. Local habitants bear the brunt of climate change and feel the adverse impact of deforestation in their daily lives. Long periods of drought drain vital streams in the Amazon basin. Sometimes the rainfall becomes so intense that floods have reportedly washed away farmland and houses.

Saúde e Alegria’s role in protect the climate

Since 1994 the Lateinamerika-Zentrum e.V. (LAZ; Latin America Center) successfully cooperates with Projeto Saúde e Alegria. Within the context of the educational program, the LAZ connected the organization with the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis (Rhein-Sieg district). For the project, the organization provides first-eye information on the situation in their area and captures these impressions in form of a film. It shows the dimension of deforestation and its effects on the population and the global climate. Also, the film illustrates the implementation of a reforestation project and how it changed the life of the population in a positive way.
